DROP: What If the Finish Line Was Always an Illusion?
Tip No. 8
There's a feeling most of us carry earnestly into every week: that if we could just get on top of everything, we'd finally feel okay. Caught up. In control. Like we could breathe. It's not even a conscious thought most of the time — more like background static, a je ne sais quoi of not-quite-there-yet that relentlessly drives every decision about how we spend our time.
Here's what that feeling won't tell you: “on top of everything” doesn't exist. It never has. The list doesn’t end, it just changes shape. Waiting to feel okay until you've caught up is waiting for something that was never coming.
THIS WEEK’S DROP TIP:
Drop the illusion that you'll eventually get on top of everything.
You’ll never get there, and the sooner you make peace with that, the sooner you can be at ease with where you choose to put your focus.
You could spend a lifetime trying to outrun your to-do list. Or you can stop, turn around, and decide you're okay with never finishing it. Oddly liberating, right? Because the moment you accept it, you're no longer chasing — you're choosing. And choosing is the whole point.
SIT WITH THIS
What have you been saving for when the list gets short enough?
The list isn't getting shorter. But your life is. Go spend it well.

P.S. Oliver Burkeman's Four Thousand Weeks is the most honest book I've read about making peace with an unfinishable life, and it's one of my favorites on the Beyond Delegation reading list.
